JUNE 2008 GUIDANCE LETTER

Dear parents and students,
What a delightful year this has been with all of you! We’ve learned a lot about each other. Hopefully, students, you have made your friendships stronger and become better problem solvers. The skills you have developed will help you to be leaders here at Central and in the middle school. Learning to work together cooperatively, making sure that problems are solved in safe, fair, thoughtful of others’ feelings, and workable ways makes you someone that others enjoy being around. Keep being the kind of person that cares about others, that seeks peaceful solutions to problems, that gives your best in all situations.
Thank you for all the ways in which you have supported each other and our school community, from community service to being bus or reading buddies to food drives, penny drives, kind words, being assertive in the face of mean comments to a classmate and countless other positive actions and words. You are what make my role as school counselor so fulfilling. And how could it not be when you make working with you such a positive experience?
To the parents of these lovely children: As the warm days of summer bring increased family time I want to thank you for the gift of your children. I have enjoyed getting to know them and their delightful personalities and have appreciated their many thoughtful comments and contributions to guidance class. I have probably had more heartwarming and positive problem solving interchanges with your children than I could ever hope to have. I have learned from each of them. You should be proud of the way they process problems, engage in constructive solutions, and provide our younger students with the role modeling they need and admire.
I wish you all the best of summer days, family time, and relaxing activities. While Mr. Day might advocate for active family time, and I support that, I hope you will find time to talk with your child about his/her hopes, dreams, thoughts about friendship, growing up, and the everyday sorts of problems that might arise. These precious moments of everyday time are great opportunities to get to know who your child is, what he/she thinks about a variety of issues, and how your values might support decisions that will be made.
Have a wonderful summer! I eagerly look forward to my new third graders and my returning students who will be fourth graders. I sadly say goodbye to my wonderful fifth graders. I know you will add immeasurably to the middle school with your presence. Don’t forget to stop by and say hello next year once you get settled.
Warmly,
Maddie Nash
